In the spring as the weather begins to warm and it is so enjoyable to be outdoors, it is easy to give our lawns the attention they need. It is a pleasure to see the blades of grass begin to turn green, and it is no sacrifice to spend our free time outdoors doing what we think we can for our yards. In actuality, spring is not the only time we should give our lawns attention. All the seasons of the year have particular tasks that can enhance the beauty of our lawns, and a year round lawn care schedule is in our own best interests.
It may come as no surprise that the winter months do give us a certain amount of rest from yard chores. There is no need to fertilize or be out on the lawn mowing it every weekend. The winter months are the best times to pay attention to maintenance of our equipment, such as the lawn mower, before we get too busy in the spring and summer. Winter time is a superb opportunity to walk around the yard to take note of the places that will need some extra attention such as re-seeding barer patches.

QUESTION:
Can anyone give me a good lawn care schedule?
I just bought a house with a decent but not great lawn. I have maintained a pretty good watering and mowing schedule, but have seen the lawn begin to brown and appear thinner. Can someone tell me from beginning to end what I should do and when to bring the lawn back? I want to give it a shot before resorting to just pulling it out and putting in new sod.
Also I have a dog and obviously fear using anything toxic that he may be exposed to.

ANSWER:
Buy or use a mulching mower....fertilizes the grass everytime you use it......I fertilize my lawn by the rule of threes: weed and feed at Easter, Memorial Day and Labor Day.....makes it easy to remember when to do it....I like Scotts Turf Builder plus 2 or Vigoro or Green Power weed and feed....all do a good job. Keep lawn watered if you are in a very dry area.....all lawns need a good drench once or so a week in the summer.

QUESTION:
What is a good lawn care schedule for Massachusetts (Zone 5B)?
We're new home owners trying to maintain a 1/2 acre yard in Central Massachusetts. I'm trying to find a simple lawn care calendar to follow but this is proving difficult as the internet is full of contradictory information on the subject.Specifically we're looking for the best times to overseed, fertilize, lime, treat for grubs, mow heights, watering amounts, etc. Does anyone have a good link or good advice on this subject? A simple calendar format would be ideal.

QUESTION:
Bermuda Lawn Care Schedule?
I have bermuda grass on my new home in Dallas. it was planted in December of 2006. For the most part the grass is doing good, there are some dead spots that are i am trying to fill up with bermuda seeds.my problem is that i have alot of crab grass on my lawn that grows super fast and makes my lawn look really bad, is there something i can do about that?
Also what is the best fertilization, weed control, watering schedule for this type of grass? Next year when should i apply the crabbgrass and other weed control?
Please advise..

ANSWER:
I grew up in Memphis, TN where all of the beautifully kept lawns are Bermuda or Zoysia. As for the Bermuda grass, we always had great luck with ours. What I would suggest for the dead spots is to plug the area with a piece of your Bermuda grass sod. Just dig up a small piece about the size of a softball and plug it into the middle of the dead spot. Fertilize with Ammonia Nitrate and water, water, water and the Bermuda grass will spread so fast. We did an entire acre of yard this way, so it can be done. As for the weeds, there used to be a product out there called ANSAR that was wonderful for killing the crabgrass and other weeds but it has been outlawed in its original strength. It has been released for sale in a weaker solution and been outlawed and released again, etc so that isn't an option any more but you could go to your local CO OP and ask for advice on killing the weeds. You don't want to fertilize the weeds so I wouldn't recommend fertilizing the Bermuda grass right now, even though you could. You can also pull weeds (been there, done that) and that is really the most efficient way to get rid of them but if your yard is large or you have too many weeds, I understand that that is not an option. Just get your CO OP to recommend something for the weeds and hopefully you can spray the lawn when there is going to be an extended dry period and when the weeds are crispy brown, then pour the Ammonia Nitrate and water to the lawn and your yard will be the envy of the neighborhood. It will look like a golf course! Hope this helps!!
